5 Ways to Communicate With Confidence
5 Ways to Communicate With Confidence 5 Ways to Communicate With Confidence Communicating with confidenceis the difference between telling your boss that you need the day off and asking if it would be possible to take the day off. While you shouldnt act self-righteous or disrespect your superiors, it is important to take charge and act on what you need.It can be a hard to communicate with confidence, especially if you arent used to actively telling people how you feel and what you need. However, once you learn how to communicate confidently, youll notice an immediate difference in how others treat you for the better.1. Explain, Dont AskHow would you react if someone asked you, Can I take this day off? If its too busy or you cant make it work, thats fine? You would probably checktheschedule for that day before deciding whether or not to let that person take a day off. Now, imagine they said this instead I need to take this day off because I have a personal obligation.Youd probably ac t pretty differently, right? When you make a statement instead of posing a question, people tend to accept it. When you ask for a day off, you suggest it isnt a big deal if you cant take off. When you assert that you need a day off, people will assume its important.2. Know Your ValueI often see people undervaluing themselves and their success on their resumes. To communicate with confidence, you need to know your value. Dont let anyone undermine you or make you feel as though what youre communicating is unreasonable.Try to always have concrete evidence backing up what you are communicating. Try to predict and plan for possible objections or concerns in advance. If you are confident in your statement, others will be, too.3. Prepare Ahead of TimeThe key to communicating with confidence is to prepare ahead of time. Very few people feel good about going into situations unprepared. Determine your strategy ahead of time and practice what you want to say so you feel comfortable and dont st umble. You may want to practice multiple times The more you actually say what you want to say out loud, the more comfortable you will be.Another way to prepare is to write down the pros and consof your statement. This way you can acknowledge different viewpoints but still argue in your points favor. Acknowledging others perspectives shows them you have taken various points into account and still believe your own option isbest.4. Dont Back Down If You Dont Believe Its RightPart of being an adult is admitting when youre wrong, and there is nothing bad about that. However, if you truly believe that youre right, dont back down. If you want to communicate with confidence, you need to show others that you are not second-guessing yourself. When you lose confidence in what youre saying, others will, too.5. Accept That You Dont Always Have to Say YesIts human nature to want to help others, but saying yesisnt always in your best interest. You dont have to say agree to something if you arent c omfortable with it and that includes when people ask you to take on new tasks at work. If theres too much on your plate, be clear and communicate that. No one will penalize you for wanting to do a good job with what you have already taken on. If taking on another project will cause you too much stress, politely decline. It is important to realize is that you dont owe anyone at work an explanation if you cannot do extra work that is above and beyond your original agreement. Simply saying I cannot do that should suffice. If someone prods you for more information, all you need to say is I have a lot on my plate, and I want to make aya I can do everything to the best of my ability. We all find ourselves in situations where we need to assert our wants, needs, and abilities, butdoing so can be difficult. Communicating with confidence shows others that you arent going to back down and let them choose for you. Whether you are at work, with friends, or with your family, being able to communic ate with confidence will help you take control of your life.Michele Lando is a certified professional resume writer and the founder ofWrite Styles.

7 Ways to Excel in a Male-Dominated Workplace
7 Ways to Excel in a Male-Dominated Workplace7 Ways to Excel in a Male-Dominated WorkplaceYou rarely see aelendher soul in the ladies room. On too many occasions, youve been mistaken for someones assistant. Sound familiar? For many young, successful women, making it professionally means learning to master male-dominated workplaces where boys clubs still somehow pervade. In college, I lived with seven girls. And so, perhaps it was no surprise that I found the transition to investment banking- where I was the only female analyst in my groups class- to be rather challenging. But from finance, I jumped into sports, and I have yet to look back. And along the way, I picked up some practical tips for thriving in the office- even when the gender ratio isnt in your favor.1. The Squeaky Wheel Gets the Grease Chances are, your male colleagues are constantly vocalizing which opportunities and projects they want- and you might be sitting there, working hard, and waiting to get what is rightfully yo urs.Sadly, most bosses are too busy to figure out what the most equitable project allocation is, and it often comes down to who yapped last to them about that hot media deal or the new partnership your company is launching. If you arent good at grabbing your boss in the hall or during your morning coffee break and bringing up the projects that excite you, then schedule formal time to check in at least once a month and let your boss know what youd like to work on.2. Beer is for BondingThe best career opportunities often come out of interactions outside the office- often over a beer. The guys Ive worked with would grab beers all the time- and I quickly learned to join them, whether or not I felt like drinking that particular night. And if youre not invited (yes, this happened to me), create your own happy hour invitation- who can turn down a cold brewski?3. Avoid Being Too Easily OffendedGuys have this thing at work called the Circle of Trust. You gain entry when they know they can be themselves around you, without being reported to HR. In the banking analyst bullpen, I heard every disgusting story there is to tell- but I stayed cool. And as a result, I eventually became part of the group and was included in the nights of ordering dinner in or going out for beers.Note There is a line, and staying cool doesnt mean letting the guys cross it- sexual harassment is never OK.4. Dont Be Anyones Coffee or Lunch GetterHow many successful men in the workplace do you see picking up their bosss lunch or coffee? If youre not someones assistant, do not get in the habit of acting like one. Sure, maybe there are special exceptions when your boss is in fire drill mode or decides to treat a group for getting his coffee- but dont make it a regular thing. And if your male peers arent chipping in- then you shouldnt be doing it, either.5. Dont Be the Yes WomanIn the industries Ive worked in, theres tremendous pressure to work hard and keep an overflowing plate. Lunch and coffee runs aside, its all too easy to say yes to every project as you strive to be a good employee- but if you never say no, youll ultimately just hurt both yourself and your company. Its important to stand up for the projects you really want to work on (see 1), and then push back at other times when you dont have capacity. You can bet many of the guys say no- and you should, too.6. Play to Your Strengths (Even When Theyre Stereotypes)The first week of my banking internship, my managing director asked me how the interns were doing and feeling. Im willing to bet he asked me partly because I was the only woman there, and he assumed I was therefore most likely to know about peoples feelings. But you know what? I did. And thus started our mutually beneficial relationship I gave him a live read of the pulse of the group he was managing, and he gave me the opportunity for senior exposure. Whether its listening, emotional aptitude, empathy, socializing or just being the den mother- if you have these strengths, play to them. Theyre good qualities to demonstrate as a rising future leader, and, particularly in a workplace where those skills are in short supply, theyre also not a bad way to get noticed.7. Get a SponsorA sponsor is a mentor who will promote you within your organization, who has your back, and who will tell the rest of organization- including the senior leaders- how great you are and how much you deserve recognition (and promotions). And like it or not, it can be nearly impossible to advance as a woman in a male-dominated workplace without a sponsor. Dr. Sylvia Ann Hewlett has written quite a bit about sponsorship, including its importance for women. What does it all mean for you? Start building relationships with your boss and other senior leaders from the beginning, and pay particular attention to cultivate those relationships with the individuals who believe in you and publicly support you- they are going to be your best advocates.Read more from The Daily Muses Ca reer Advancement Month.Photo of group in office courtesy of Shuttestock.

One simple trick to a happier office
One simple trick to a happier officeOne simple trick to a happier officeReject the lesser candidate. Confront the lazy employee. Give critical feedback on that project right away. Your office will be happier for it.Thats advice from a recent study published in the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin which found that feeling ignored or unacknowledged is worse for a persons mental health than receiving bad news.Ostracism is mora powerful than we think, says study co-authorAndrew H. Hales, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Virginia. Ignoring someone is a non-behavior because youre bedrngnis directly insulting them - youre not behaving at all. And its hard to appreciate how painful that feels. In a series of four studies, Hales and his team rounded up 600 men and women and had them undergo experiments specifically designed to make some feel left out. In the first, subjects played an online ball-tossing game in which some were consistently thrown a ball, others received no throws until the very end of the game, and a third group was ignored altogether. In a second experiment, people were asked to create personal profiles and apply for an apartment online. The landlord denied all the applications via notes which read, So-and-so has rejected your request, but in some cases, attached a personal note with either a friendly, cold, or neutral message explaining the thinking behind the decision. For example, You seem to be a nice person, I really dont care where you live but not here, and I feel mixed about this.Heres what happened People rejected in both experiments felt embarrassed, uncomfortable, and awkward, those who were ultimately acknowledged with either a few ball tosses toward the end of the game or with a note explaining why they didnt land the apartment, felt better about themselves. People are always worse off when they get rejected, Hales clarifies, but being acknowledged makes it not as bad.Like most social constructs, fear of excl usion can be traced back to evolution. In order to survive, people stayed together to gain resources and such groups secured more sexual opportunities, emotional support, and physical protection from predators. Obviously, weve evolved, but that basic need to be included and accounted for remains.Ostracism on the job is no different, says Hales, adding that work is rife with opportunities to select and reject, i.e., hiring, promotions, forming teams, and office parties. Theres also an economic cost to exclusion Missed opportunities to bond or work with coworkers can affect performance and even job security. You may understand logically that you should just get over rejection but thats easier said than done, says Hales. One reason is, rejection physically hurts - research shows the human brain responds to both physical and emotional pain by releasing natural painkillers called opioids to make people feel better. When you hear someone say it hurts to be left out, theyre not being drama tic, says Hales.Feeling unacknowledged also has the capacity to send people into an obsessive vortex of self-blame. According to Daniel Amen, a psychologist, neuroscientist, and author of 10 New York Times bestsellers, stress releases a hormone called cortisol which damages cells in the brains hippocampus, the portion linked to memory and mood. Some people deal with stress by turning outward and blaming others, but others turn inward and blame themselves, says Amen. For the latter group, heres what that looks like Im getting fired, I suck at interviewing, or Is everyone in the conference room without me?If you know in your gut that youre not going to promote someone, let them know ASAP.Fortunately, managers are in a position to help maintain their staffs sanity - and become better bosses for it. Here are some ideasIf you know in your gut that youre not going to promote or hire someone, its decent to let them know ASAP. We didnt test whether a quick response reduced feelings of ostra cism, but our study implies it, says Hales. Youll clear your plate and the other person will rebound quicker and respect your transparency.Likewise, if an employee is underperforming, annoying the team, or just isnt aware of how you like things done, its your job to be candid. Its not pleasant to give or receive a negative review, but that uncomfortable conversation can save everyone time and angst. As Hales wrote in his study, This is especially important given that individuals can possibly also learn better from well-phrased criticism than from dead silence. Also, write that difficult email, whether youre making a big ask to the corporate gods or defending a team member. Not only does efficiency feel awesome, your initiative will underscore your status as a leader and help you avoid succumbing to your own anxiety stemming from procrastination. The bottom line A little discomfort in the short term will establish a healthy, collaborative, and focused office culture - which is what he lps us be at our best (and do our best work) in the first place. This article was originally published on Shondaland.
